The Canadian based electric aviation start-up Opener, recently launched Blackfly. It is an electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) personal aerial vehicle. The pilot controls the vehicle through a joystick, and it doesn’t require a formal license to fly the vehicle in the U.S.

BlackFly has been recognized as the world’s first light-weight single-seated personal flying vehicle. It might be the as close as we can get for a flying car.

According to Opener, the BlackFly is designed to enable people to reach their destination easily. It’s easy to operate and safety proofed. The BlackFly takes about eight hours to charge and can travel up to 25 miles per charge at 62 miles per hour speed. It is controlled by a joystick and fly-by-wire electrical controls.

The BlackFly installed the “triple-modular redundant flight systems” with fault tolerant design and optional ballistic parachute system to ensure the safety of the rider.

The aircraft doesn’t need an airport, and it can land on grass, asphalt, snow and even ice. The maximum climb rate and descent of the BlackFly can be scaled up to 1000 feet per minute. The take-off and landing can be done within 36 inches of space.

The aircraft is measured at 5 feet tall, 13 feet 7 inches wide and 13 feet 5 inches long. It weighs around 313 pounds when its empty.
