There’s still this weird attitude around gaming where people act like it doesn’t really count, right, like it’s just messing around, just sitting there, just a hobby, so who cares if the chair is bad, the desk is awkward, and the monitor’s got somebody staring down at it like a sad little shrimp for five hours straight. Even for a lot of people who are beginning with PC gaming, like transitioning from console to PC, they often think that as long as you have a working computer and a good graphics card, you’re good to go.

But of course, here, that thinking falls apart pretty fast once the wrists start aching, the shoulders feel tight for no good reason, and the neck starts doing that thing where it feels stiff enough to be annoying all day. Basically, you’ll be uncomfortable, you’ll feel stiff, you’ll be in pain, and you’ll probably wonder why you’re in so much pain, too.

It Wears You Down Over Time

And that’s the part people brush off way too much. Because a bad gaming setup can absolutely start wearing on the body, it’s not super noticeable at first, but usually it starts small; a little soreness here, some tingling there,  and it just gets worse and worse over time. Give it a few months (sometimes years). Sure, most people focus on LED lights, anime figurines, and some kawaii stuff for their desk (which is nice and all), but you still need to actually focus on the general comfort while gaming more than anything else.

The Hunched-Over Gamer Stereotype Exists for a Reason

People joke about gamers being folded in half over a desk all the time, and okay, yeah, there’s a reason that image exists. A lot of setups really do encourage that exact posture. Somebody leans forward, shoulders creep up, wrists bend in ways they really shouldn’t, and then that position gets held for hours, and you don’t even realize that it’s multiple hours.

And of course, you better believe here that kind of thing catches up. Maybe not in one night, sure, but over time it can start causing real problems. As mentioned already, eventually carpal tunnel issues can happen, shoulder tension, strained eyes, lower back pain, you get the point here. And if you’re young, even in your teens, up to your 30s, probably even early 40s, you shouldn’t be dealing with these issues. You shouldn’t have these issues; you’re too young for these issues.

Comfort Shouldn’t be an Afterthought

While sure, anything gamer-related tends to come in that rainbow LED lighting, and sure, have at it, but you still need to keep comfort in mind. Nowadays, ergonomics and gaming do go together, so it’s not like you need sterile and sad-looking corporate office furniture. There are even gaming chairs that support the body, that have lumbar support, that are made for the body that will be sitting there for hours at a time.

The same goes for keyboards, a mouse, and all of those things can be gamer and ergonomic-friendly too. Seriously, they’re worth their weight in gold. If you’re going to enjoy a hobby, should you at least do it in comfort?
