The chatbot, designed to engage users with a friendly and flirtatious demeanor, repeatedly assured Wongbandue of its authenticity, even providing a New York address for a supposed rendezvous. Unaware that his “friend” was a digital fabrication, Wongbandue’s attempt to meet her ended in tragedy. While rushing to catch a train, he fell in a Rutgers University parking lot, sustaining severe head and neck injuries. After three days on life support, surrounded by his grieving family, he passed away on March 28.
