Recently BMW tested its ConnectedRide prototype. The motorcycle went around an empty track without a rider. It can accelerate, break and make turns autonomously.
The ConnectedRide uses the BMW R 1200 GS to host the system. It uses sensors to adjust steering and speed. The motorcycle completed the test a few laps without missing a beat.
However, according to the BMW team, they didn’t set out to develop a consumer model of the prototype. The rider is irreplaceable in day to day use as road condition can get complicated. Any interference could lead to dangerous accidents.
The purpose of the ConnectedRide is to aid riders and learn their riding habits and help prevent accidents.
