The Airfish-8, a hybrid of plane, boat, and car developed by Widget Works, is touted by investors to be the next generation marine transport.

The peculiar look does remind us a lot of a seaplane, but it is actually registered as a merchant ship under the Singapore Registry of Shipping.

The Airfish-8, powered by a V8 car engine, sits up to 8 people at a time, hovering 2-6 meters above water at a maximum speed of 180 km/h without requiring a jetty or runway. It can accommodate travel between islands where plane rides are beyond reach and ferry or boat rides will be either too long or too bumpy.

The flying-boat or marine-plane is based on a German prototype, and utilizes Wing-In-Ground (WIG) effect to realize above-water flight. Its travel is maintained by a field of continuing compressed air beneath the wings, a pressure high enough to support the weight and let the Airfish to glide above the cushion of air. Nevertheless, the experience could be affected by rough waves as the they could drastically alter the air pressure under the wings.

The Airfish -8 can be used in a number of scenarios according to Forbes, such as transferring crew from base to offshore oil platform, coast guard and marine police, light cargo transport between islands, and maybe military applications

The Airfish-8 is still in trial phase and is reported to be operational in the second half of 2018. Anyone interested in taking a ride?
